We met with MassDEP today to discuss our concerns around the contamination at the site and Enrbidge’s dangerous cleanup process. We met with Millie Garcia-Serrano, Regional Director of the MassDEP Southeast Regional Office, and Gerard Martin, Deputy Regional Director for the Bureau of Waste Site Management. The meeting was a roundtable discussion and lasted nearly four hours. You can watch the livestream below.

A few weeks ago, we occupied DEP’s office in Lakeville after all of our calls and emails went unanswered for weeks. Dozens of people occupied the office for a few hours as we waited for a representative to speak with us. A DEP representative eventually agreed to respond to our inquiries via email, which they had previously been ignoring. Soon after we stormed their office, Nathan Phillips started a hunger strike (you can read his statement and demands here). All of these events put enough pressure on DEP to get them to agree to met with us in a public format. We will be meeting with the Southeast Regional Office this Friday.

FRRACS urges JF Price to cancel their contract with Enbridge

We delivered a letter to the owner of JF Price today, demanding that they cancel any further contracts with Enbridge that they have remaining.
JF Price, a local company, has been supplying Enbridge with sand and gravel, which is enabling Enbridge's destructive project to continue. In addition to our letter, we provided JF Price with a packet of informational material about the project and why it is so harmful.

Irving Oil is the last potential buyers for the gas that would run through the compressor station. Late last year, National Grid and Eversource stated that they do not need the gas that would be supplied by the compressor station. Irving Institute for Energy and Society at Dartmouth at (603) 646-6683 and urge Irving Oil to cancel its contract with Enbridge.

Strength in the Struggle: Faith leaders march to compressor construction site

Today, over 100 faith and spiritual leaders and people of good will gathered at Quincy Point Congregational Church and marched together to Enrbidge’s construction site. The sound of the shofar echoed across Boston Harbor from a spit of land just next to the Fore River Bridge in Weymouth. It was a call to faith and spiritual leaders from many traditions to march along the fence-line of a construction site where Enbridge is attempting to build a 7700 hp fracked gas compressor station.

Enbridge contractors are not in compliance with toxic waste removal from the North Parcel — the RAM (release abatement measure) plan has been blatantly ignored. Enbirdge has violated many cleanup procedures, including the requirement to construct a decontamination pad before soil removal began. Alice Arena submitted a noncompliance complaint to FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission). See her letter below.

If built, the impacts of the compressor station would extend far beyond Weymouth and the South Shore. The compressor station would connect to existing pipelines that run through multiple other states and into Canada. The methane emissions that would be released from the compressor would further contribute to the local and global climate crisis. This isn’t a NIMBY issue. Adam Rice, a Maine resident and member of Extinction Rebellion Maine, is trying to draw those connections. Adam wrote a piece about the compressor and it’s regional impacts. You can read it below. Concerned residents of the South Shore and their allies occupied the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Southeast Regional Office today, to call attention to the Department’s failure to “ensure clean air, land and water,” as its mission states.
A group of residents peacefully entered the building’s main conference room to request a meeting with DEP officials, who for weeks have failed to respond to emails and phone calls from residents reporting inconsistencies, discrepancies, and violations of the contamination clean-up plan for the ill-conceived Weymouth Compressor station.
