A recent investigative article in the New York Times shows how FTI Consulting has worked with the fossil fuel industry and the utilities to infiltrate groups like ours to disrupt our work to prevent more fossil fuel extraction and usage. This article, from WBUR, is extremely troubling in light of the NYT article.

We had a rather difficult monthly meeting last night, but in the midst of all of it we began to reflect on all that we have accomplished together in the almost six years of this fight. Member Andrea said, "Can you write that down?"

We thought that this is a good time to stop for a moment and reflect on what this fight has been about and what YOU, our dear Member, have done.

Collusion. A word that has seen a lot use in the past few years, eh, Campers? Why do we use it? There is a timeline that includes the Town's refusal to investigate dragging contaminated soils out of the parcel and onto the roadways, their refusal to demand that Enbridge adhere to Covid protocols, dragging their feet on the placement of the air quality monitor so that no baseline numbers will be available before the compressor goes online, and a little nuisance lawsuit brought by Enbridge against FRRACS and the Town that kept getting kicked down the road until Enbridge suddenly withdrew its own suit in mid October.

The Quincy City Council will be discussing Quincy's opposition to the compressor station at their meeting tonight. We would like to recognize and thank the City of Quincy for their continued support of the residents of the Basin--be they from Quincy, Weymouth, or Braintree. The City will be joining FRRACS on our testimony before the DEP late this month. If you are a Quincy resident, be sure to tune in! And thank your City Councilors!

Senators Markey and Warren have sent another letter to FERC, urging the agency to revoke authorization for the Weymouth Compressor, citing safety concerns. Many thanks to our Senators for their continued opposition to this project.

Mayor Hedlund announced last week that he accepted $10 million from Enbridge, and in turn, dropped all of the town’s lawsuits against Enbridge. We are very disappointed with this decision. We sent a letter to the Mayor which you can read below.

Many of you may already be quite aware that the Town of Weymouth, under the direction of Mayor Hedlund, has accepted a payout of $10M in exchange for dropping all legal actions against Algonquin/Enbridge in regards to the compressor station. To say that we are disappointed is likely the understatement of the year. You can read about the Town's decision here.

Today marked not only Halloween but a full moon, a Blue Moon, Samhain, and All Saints Day. We celebrated with a display of Jack-o’-lanterns in the park and a standout on the bridge. Thank you to everyone who joined us!

We wrote to the Mayor back in April regarding the $10M. You can read the letter here. We were told that many of our demands for any contract were written into the one ultimately signed. But, we never agreed that this was a good idea, and we are certain that Enbridge did not submit to insurance coverage or safety review. This is a bad deal all around. You can read the contract here. The safety and evacuation plan for the compressor station is available here. We believe that this plan is weak and that our town emergency departments are not well-equipped to handle an explosion or serious accident at the compressor station.

Another correspondence to Sen. O'Connor and the delegation in response to their letter to the AG regarding violations of EJ notification regulations by the DEP and concerns regarding the continued overburdening of EJ communities like the Basin.

South Shore legislators sent a letter to MassDEP in September after Enbridge’s compressor station had multiple system failures. Commissioner Martin Suuberg of MassDEP responded to their letter today. Of course, the usual--nothing to see here, move along. As we await the investigative report on the two accidents in September, do not be surprised if these same organizations rubber stamp the start up of the compressor within the next days or weeks.
