Action Item: Call MEMA and ask for a safety & evacuation plan

Despite having had an accident--or as Enbridge calls it, an "unplanned release"--just last Friday, Enbridge thought it would be a good idea to send the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission a request to begin full operations on October 1.

We have been communicating with all of the powers-that-be regarding the unsafe situation that Enbridge created last week by putting gas through a system that did not have a functioning Emergency Shut Down system. We will continue to reach out to Federal, State, and Local officials and agencies to demand safety for all of us in the Basin.

But, we need your help. We need to make a lot of noise. We have asked you in the past to call or email anyone from the Governor Baker to Mayor Hedlund to Martin Suuberg at the DEP. So maybe it's time to make a new friend.

Samantha Phillips is the head of the Mass Emergency Management Agency. MEMA is the agency that SHOULD have paid a lot more attention to the siting of this compressor station. They have failed us as a region by ignoring all of the safety issues we have brought up for almost six years. They have failed to provide even the most basic safety and evacuation plans for the residents of the Basin.

We are counting on you to call Ms. Phillips at 508-820-2010 or Tweet to her @MassEMA and ask even one of these questions:

--Why has MEMA ignored the dangers of fire or explosion at a site that is regionally important for gas and oil storage?

--Why has MEMA not given a safety and evacuation plan for the residents of the Basin?

--Why has MEMA ignored the potential damage to the Fore River Bridge that will cause major transportation disruptions?

--Why has MEMA ignored the potential damage to the MWRA sewage pumping station that processes 60 million gallons of sewage a day from fourteen South Shore towns?

When you make a call, we would love an email from you to let us know and to help us tally up the number of contacts (nocompressor@gmail.com). When you Tweet, be sure to tag us @FRRACS_MA and use #MEMAFailed.

We know you are frustrated, angry, and anxious. So are we. Now, however, is not the time to give up. Now is the time to fight harder. Let's make Mayor Hedlund's prediction of the compressor come true--a $100M White Elephant
