FRRACS' Air Quality Network - Live Updates

FRRACS’ Air Quality Network

We are building a local network of purple air monitors in the Fore River Basin. We are going to have multiple monitors in the different Environmental Justice communities in East Braintree, Quincy Point and Germantown as well as the two Weymouth neighborhoods: Idelwell and North Weymouth.

In January 2021, we installed our first purple air monitor in Quincy Point. The first three air monitors that were donated to FRRACS come from Rehoboth Citizens Against the Compressor Station (CARCS). We are grateful for the many donations that we received to purchase another 7 monitors.

You can see an interactive map of all purple air monitors including our network at www.purpleair.com/map. You can view live updates here.

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has a temporary air monitor at the MWRA Pumping Station at the Compressor Station. This monitor measures PM 2.5 (particulate matter) and weather data. VOCs (volatile organic compounds) are measured every 6 days from canisters.

UPDATE — DEP’s Permanent AQ Monitor Installed

We have advocated along with our state delegation for a permanent air monitor to be installed in the Fore River Basin. As of March 2021, the new monitor is officially set up! It is located on Monatiquot Street in North Weymouth. The monitor will measure nitrogen dioxide, fine particulate matter, ozone, and volatile organic compounds. It will also record wind speed, temperature, and direction.

You can find air quality information from the US EPA at https://www.airnow.gov/ or on their free mobile app “AirNow” on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. This website and app connects to the state air monitor, not the purple air monitors.

You can find all of the data and maps from the state monitor on MassDEP’s website.  The permanent air monitor in North Weymouth is pictured below:
