State announces plan to place an air quality monitor in the Basin

After years of organizing, the state has responded to community demands to place an air quality monitor in the Basin. This monitor will be used to detect changes in air quality during construction. The exact placement has not been decided, but we will make sure our input is heard. This is not the end of the fight, but still an important win.

Urging Irving Oil at Dartmouth to cancel their contract with Enbridge

Irving Oil is the last potential buyers for the gas that would run through the compressor station. Late last year, National Grid and Eversource stated that they do not need the gas that would be supplied by the compressor station. We are calling on the faculty, staff, students, the board and administrators of Dartmouth to call the Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society at Dartmouth at (603) 646-6683 and urge Irving Oil to cancel its contract with Enbridge.

Today, over 100 faith and spiritual leaders and people of good will gathered at Quincy Point Congregational Church and marched together to Enrbidge’s construction site. The sound of the shofar echoed across Boston Harbor from a spit of land just next to the Fore River Bridge in Weymouth. It was a call to faith and spiritual leaders from many traditions to march along the fence-line of a construction site where Enbridge is attempting to build a 7700 hp fracked gas compressor station.

Noncompliance complaint submitted to FERC

Enbridge contractors are not in compliance with toxic waste removal from the North Parcel — the RAM (release abatement measure) plan has been blatantly ignored. Enbirdge has violated many cleanup procedures, including the requirement to construct a decontamination pad before soil removal began. Alice Arena submitted a noncompliance complaint to FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission). See her letter below.

If built, the impacts of the compressor station would extend far beyond Weymouth and the South Shore. The compressor station would connect to existing pipelines that run through multiple other states and into Canada. The methane emissions that would be released from the compressor would further contribute to the local and global climate crisis. This isn’t a NIMBY issue. Adam Rice, a Maine resident and member of Extinction Rebellion Maine, is trying to draw those connections. Adam wrote a piece about the compressor and it’s regional impacts. You can read it below. Concerned residents occupy MassDEP's office in Lakeville

Concerned residents of the South Shore and their allies occupied the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Southeast Regional Office today, to call attention to the Department’s failure to “ensure clean air, land and water,” as its mission states.

A group of residents peacefully entered the building’s main conference room to request a meeting with DEP officials, who for weeks have failed to respond to emails and phone calls from residents reporting inconsistencies, discrepancies, and violations of the contamination clean-up plan for the ill-conceived Weymouth Compressor station.

We gathered outside of the statehouse tonight with Extinction Rebellion MA to give the “People’s State of the Climate” as Governor Baker was giving his “State of the Commonwealth” address inside the statehouse. Governor Baker has failed to address serious climate issues facing Massachusetts residents, including the ill-conceived Weymouth compressor station. We wanted to make sure the truth was shared. Residents continue to push asbestos testing

We know that the proposed compressor site is a toxic site laden with coal ash, arsenic, oil, and asbestos. Enbridge’s consultant, TRC, did asbestos testing at the site but did not obtain bricks at the appropriate depth to accurately test for asbestos. We have been asking the DEP to do more testing and they have ignored us. We will continue demand more testing. Today, nine climate activists from Extinction Rebellion and 350 Mass Action blocked a cement truck from entering Enbridge's construction site for the proposed Weymouth compressor station. They delayed activities for three hours.

The People's DEP Toxic Clean-up Standout Recap

Today we gathered at the North Parcel with brooms in hand to stage a mock “cleanup” of Enbridge’s toxic site. Enbridge is digging up soil that is laden with toxins, including arsenic, coal ash, oil, and asbestos. The DEP (Dept. of Environmental Protection) is doing nothing to make sure that the cleanup is happening properly (i.e. washing tires before muddy trucks leave the site). Since the DEP does not want to do their job, the People’s DEP will.

Major victory in VA: State permit vacated for Union Hill compressor

Folks in Virginia are celebrating a major win today after the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals vacated a state permit for the Atlantic Coast Pipeline compressor station in Union Hill. Union Hill, a predominantly black community, has been fighting for years to get the Governor and state administration to address serious concerns related to the compressor station proposal. The Governor ignored environmental justice concerns over the compressor station, but the Fourth Circuit did not follow suit, stating in their decision that the state “failed in its statutory duty to determine the character and degree of injury to the health of Union Hill residents” (source: BlueVirginia.us). This is big. We congratulate folks in VA for their incredible victory!
